I feel the same way, Sea. I do think that the slower tempo benefits Adams's voice. But GP's version...that's the one I've been humming to myself for over 35 years!
That song was Gram's high point, I think. Like K, I've been listening to it since I bought the vinyl copy back in 1974. It's a definite ear worm. You sing it for a week or two after hearing it.
I love just about everything Gram did, and his stuff with Emmylou was always incredible. There's just an extra something there. What I can never get over, and maybe this is just my age talking - is that they were so young at the time. It really makes you wonder about "old souls". Or maybe you need to be young to produce stuff like that - I don't know! fabulous, anyway.

I like both versions, and admire Ryan Adams for taking it on, but the Gram one is just magical.
